How to Convert HEIC to JPG
To convert HEIC to JPG, drop the photos into the box above, keep JPG selected and press Convert. Each photo is listed with its new size as soon as it is ready.
- Add the HEIC photos. Drag them onto the box or click to choose them - up to 100 at a time, 25 MB each.
- Pick the settings. JPG, PNG or WebP; the quality; and whether to keep the date, camera and location or remove them.
- Convert and download. Download photos one by one, or press Download all for a ZIP file. Change a setting and press Convert again to redo the whole set.
Picking photos on an iPhone? Safari often hands over a JPG already when you choose from the Photos library. Those are listed as "Already a JPG" and can be downloaded as they are. To convert the original HEIC files, choose them from the Files app instead.
What Is a HEIC File?
HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is the format iPhones and iPads have used for photos since iOS 11. It stores a picture in roughly half the space of a JPG at the same visible quality, using the same compression as HEVC video. HEIF is the general name of the format; HEIC is the version Apple uses.
The catch is support. Windows needs an extra extension to open HEIC, most browsers can't show it, and many websites, forms and older apps refuse it. JPG works everywhere, which is why converting is usually the easiest fix.
JPG, PNG or WebP?
| Format | Best for | File size |
|---|---|---|
| JPG | Opening anywhere: Windows, email, forms, printing, older apps | Usually larger than the HEIC |
| PNG | Editing without any further loss | Several times larger |
| WebP | Websites and modern browsers | Usually smaller than the JPG |
All three keep the photo's full resolution. Need it smaller as well? Use the image resizer or the image compressor on the JPG afterwards.
Location and Photo Details
iPhone photos usually record where they were taken, accurate to a few metres, plus the date and the phone model. By default this converter leaves all of that out, so the JPG is safe to post or send. Choose Keep under Location, date and camera when the photos are for your own archive and you want them to sort by date in a photo app.
Either way, the photo is turned the right way up and its colour profile is kept. To check what a photo contains before you share it, use the EXIF viewer and remover.
Make an iPhone Save JPG Instead of HEIC
- New photos as JPG: Settings ▸ Camera ▸ Formats ▸ Most Compatible. Photos then take about twice the space on the phone.
- Convert when copying to a computer: Settings ▸ Photos ▸ Transfer to Mac or PC ▸ Automatic. The phone keeps HEIC and hands out JPG over a cable.
