How to Crop an Image
- Open the image. Use the editor above to open a JPG, PNG or WebP picture from your device.
- Choose Crop. Select Crop in the toolbar. A crop box appears over the picture.
- Drag the box. Move the handles until only the part you want is inside, or pick a preset ratio, then apply the crop.
- Download or publish. Press Download to save the cropped image as a PNG, or Publish to host it and get a direct link, embed code and BBCode.
Cropping only removes what is outside the box - the pixels you keep are not resampled, so the picture stays as sharp as the original.
Crop to a Ratio
A fixed ratio keeps the shape right for where the picture is going. The crop panel has presets for the common photo and screen shapes - 3:2, 4:3, 5:4, 7:5 and 16:9 among them, 16:9 being the one for banners and video thumbnails. For any other shape, type the width and height you want in pixels; equal numbers give a square, for a profile photo or avatar. Then move the box to choose what goes inside it.
Crop a Photo on a Phone
The editor runs in the phone's browser on iPhone and Android, with touch controls. Open the photo from your gallery, choose Crop, and drag the handles with your finger. There is no app to install, and the photo is not uploaded unless you publish it.
Crop a Screenshot
Screenshots usually include more than you want to share - other tabs, notifications, a name in the corner. Crop to just the part that matters before you send it. To share a screenshot without cropping, you can also paste it and get a link straight away.
After Cropping
Need a particular size? Resize it. Need the file smaller as well? Run the cropped image through Compress Image, or change its format with the image converter. For filters, text, drawing and more, the full image editor has every tool. For a longer walkthrough, see Crop an Image Online in Seconds.
