How to Make a Meme
To make a meme, pick a template or open your own picture above, choose a style and type your text. The preview updates as you type.
- Pick a template or add a picture. Choose one of the popular templates - its text boxes are already in place - or drag your own picture or GIF onto the box, click to choose it, or paste a screenshot with Ctrl+V.
- Pick a style. Top & bottom text, a caption above or below, or a poster.
- Write the text. Long lines wrap by themselves. Drag the text on the picture to move it, use the size slider, or add more text for labels.
- Share it. Download the meme as JPG or PNG, copy it straight into a chat, or press "Get a link" for a link you can paste anywhere.
Meme Styles
- Top & bottom text - the classic image macro: white Impact letters with a black outline, set-up at the top and punchline at the bottom.
- Caption above - black text on a white bar over the picture, the style you see on X, Reddit and Instagram. Good for longer jokes and "when you..." memes.
- Caption below - the same bar under the picture, for a punchline after the picture.
- Poster - a demotivational poster: the picture framed on black with a big title and a dry one-liner.
In every style you can also put extra text on the picture itself - to label the people or things in it, for example.
Tips for a Funnier Meme
- Keep it short. People read a meme in a second or two; cut every word you can.
- Set-up, then punchline. Top text (or the caption) sets the scene; the picture or the bottom text lands the joke.
- Use a clear picture. A face with a strong expression or an easy-to-read screenshot works better than a busy photo.
- Leave room for the text. If the text covers the important part, switch to a caption style or drag the text aside.
Need to cut the picture first? Use the crop tool. To hide a name or a face before you share, use the blur tool; for drawing and filters, open the image editor.
Share Your Meme
"Get a link" uploads the finished meme and gives you a link that shows the picture right in the chat on Discord, WhatsApp, Telegram, X and Reddit, plus a direct link and code for forums. You can choose to delete it automatically after a while, or keep it. Animated GIF memes keep moving: the text goes on every frame. Starting from a video clip? The GIF maker turns it into a GIF first, and GIF hosting explains how GIF links play in chats.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I make a meme?
Pick a template or open your own picture or GIF on this page, choose a style and type your text. Drag the text on the picture to move it and use the size slider to make it bigger or smaller. Then download the meme, copy it, or press "Get a link" to share it.
Does the meme maker add a watermark?
No. Many free meme generators put their name in the corner. This one does not - the meme you download or share is just your picture and your text.
Which font do memes use?
Classic memes use Impact: big white capital letters with a black outline. The meme maker uses Impact where your device has it and a near-identical free font (Anton) where it does not, so the meme looks the same on a phone and a computer.
Is my picture uploaded?
No. The meme is made in your browser and the picture stays on your device. It is only uploaded if you press "Get a link".
Can I make a GIF meme?
Yes. Open an animated GIF and type your text: it goes on every frame and the meme saves as an animated GIF (up to 480 pixels wide, so it stays small enough for chats). To turn a video clip into a GIF first, use the GIF maker.
Where do the meme templates come from?
They are the 100 most-used meme templates right now - Drake, Distracted Boyfriend, Two Buttons and more - each with the text boxes already in the right places. You can move the text, add more, or use your own picture instead.
What is a demotivational poster?
A picture in a thin white frame on a black background, with a big title and a short line underneath - a joke on office motivation posters. Choose the Poster style to make one.
Can I use the meme on Discord, WhatsApp or Reddit?
Yes. Download it or copy it and paste it into the chat, or press "Get a link" and paste the link - Discord, WhatsApp, X and Reddit show the picture right in the message.
